SCHLESWIG, Iowa-- Fred J. Jepsen, 82, of Schleswig died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.

Services will he at 10:30 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Burial will be in Morgan Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Mr. Jepsen was born Dec. 31, 1917, near Schleswig, the son of Herman and Dora (Beeck)Jepsen. He was raised on a farm in Hanover Township and attended rural school.

He worked for various area farmers. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He served with 60th Infantry Battalion, 9th Armored Division, in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. His awards and decorations include the American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. He qualified expert with the Thompson submachine gun and rifle and as a sharpshooter with the pistol.

He married Irene Meggers on Dec. 15, 1942, in Denison, Iowa.

Following his discharge, he was employed as a mechanic for Eddie Raak for two years and later operated a maintainer for Crawford County for two years. He then farmed from 1947 until retiring in 1980. He then was employed as a security guard for Iowa Beef for 15 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Fellowship Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3930. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Karen and her husband, Vern Wood, of Denison, Betty Moore of South Sioux City, Marlene and her husband, Fred Bachman, of Schleswig and Pat and her husband, Mark Bilsten, of Denison; four sons, Richard and his fiancée, Ruth Burk, of Denison, Lonny and his wife, Tracey, of Early, Iowa, Gaylen and his wife, Jayne, of Denison and David and his friend, Laurie Martinez, of Schleswig; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four brothers, Herman and Vernon and his wife, Diane, all of Ricketts, Iowa, Edwin and his wife, Marilyn, of Denison and Victor and his wife, Shirley, of Battle Creek, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Ted Abbe of Schleswig; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Jepsen; an infant son, Curtis; and a sister, Irene Abbe.
