George W. McCoid was born December 18, 1923, the son of Tobe and Tina Ohl McCoid. He died June 27, 2007 in Cupertino, California at the age of eighty-three.

George attended country schools near his home and spent his younger years around the Dunlap area. In 1943, he joined the armed forces and was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for his basic training. In 1945, he was sent to Scotland, then to France, and finally to Germany, where he was in the Occupation Army in the Engineering Corps. He met his wife, Jenny, in Bremen, Germany and was united in marriage on August 12, 1946 in Ghente, Belgium. The couple returned to the United Sates and made their home on a farm north of Dow City and were blessed with the birth of three sons.

He worked for H.F. Schroeder and Sons Construction of Carroll, Iowa, for several years. They then moved to Pierre, South Dakota, where George worked on the big dam that was built there. The couple moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where George worked on missile bases in the area. In 1963, their son, Mickey was killed in a car-train accident, and the couple moved to San Jose, California, where George worked road construction and other earth-moving jobs, until his retirement in the early 90's. In his spare time, George enjoyed dancing, especially polka dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenny of 53 years; two sons, Mickey and Larry; one grandson, Jason; and one brother, Dale. He is survived by his son, Richard and his wife, Jeri of Santa Cruz, California; four grandchildren, Chad; Kelley; Levi; and Joshua; his sister, Pat Garrett and her husband, Don of Dow City; and one sister-in-law, Helen McCoid of Vail; his special friend, Betty Butts; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Cathy Garrett officiated the services and EveVonne Muff sang "How Great Thou Art," and "Amazing Grace." Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 444 of Dow City, Iowa. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Community of Christ Church. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
