Cletus "Clete" Vitus Lickteig was born July 13, 1930, the son of Raymond and Mary Schechinger Lickteig. He died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at his home in Denison at the age of seventy-six.

Clete was born in Westphalia, Iowa and received his education in the St. Boniface Catholic School where he graduated with the class of 1948. After completing his education, he joined the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Korea and Japan theaters. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1952, he continued his education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. June 19, 1954, Clete was united in marriage to Virginia Gubbels. The couple settled in Westphalia and were blessed with the birth of four children.

While in Westphalia, Clete was employed as the manager of the Westphalia Co-op Store from 1954, to 1965. The family moved to Denison where Cletus and Virginia operated Clete's Open Market from 1965 to 1970. He sold real estate for Gene Zenk Realty for a short time before opening the A & W Family Restaurant which he operated from 1970 to 1982. In 1982 they began operating the Denison Fruit Market that continued until 1994 when they retired.

His greatest interest was his family but other attractions included planting and caring for his fruit garden, trees, socializing at a game of cards with family and friends and simply being a friend to everyone. He had a very keen memory of historic and past events and for family genealogy. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the parish cemetery board, the Knights of Columbus 3rd degree Council No. 1741, and 4th degree Luke E. Hart, the American Legion Post 8 and the V.F.W., A.S.A. Korea and Schuetzen Verein.

Clete was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary Lickteig; his step-mother, Ada Lickteig; and one sister, Sister Raymarie Lickteig. Survivors include: his wife, Virginia of Denison; two sons, Mike and his wife, Kathy of Kiron; Robert also of Kiron; two daughters, Gaileen Fosmer and her husband, Mike of Omaha; and Jo Monahan and her husband, Mike of Denton, Texas; six grandchildren, Erika Bygness and her husband, Ryan; Jordan Lickteig; Garret Fosmer; Katelyn Fosmer; Taylor Lickteig and Makayla Monahan; and one great-grandchild, Quinlan Bygness; two sisters, Therese Henscheid and her husband, Urban of Westphalia; Thelma Pauley and her husband, Erv of Denison; two brothers, Ed Lickteig and his wife, Cathy of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Ralph Lickteig and his wife, Nancy of Fremont, Nebraska.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 29th, 2007 . Fr. Wayne Gubbels served as Celebrant of the mass and graveside services held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Organist Jean Corneluis and the St. Rose of Lima Choir provided the service music. Sister Joyce Blum, Dorothy Leinen, and Andrea Hansen served as Eucharistic Ministers; Maria Muhlbauer, Ryan Bygness, and Carol Lickteig were service participants. Mass servers were T.J. and Sierra Pauley and Gift Bearers were Jordan and Taylor Lickteig, Garret and Katelyn Fosmer, Erika and Quinlan Bygness, Makayla Monahan. Those serving as pallbearers were Jerry Henscheid, Jordan Lickteig, Scott Lickteig, Garret Fosmer, James Koesters, Craig Gubbels, Tim Lickteig, and J.R. Pauley. The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard Council 2074 and Council 1741 were present as Honor Guard at the visitatation and at Mass. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8 and V.F.W. Post 2504 of Denison. Monday prayer services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4 p.m., and a Parish Wake Service at 7 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the St. Rose of Lima Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
