Paul Martin Curnyn was born July 1, 1927, the son of Thomas and Gertrude Sullivan Curnyn. He died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-nine.

Paul was born in Greeley, Nebraska and was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. At the age of seven, Paul and his family moved to a farm near Denison. He received his education at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, and graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1946. On November 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lucille Slechta, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. They met at the Stardom Roller Rink in Denison. The couple made their home on the farm west of Denison and were blessed with the birth of two sons, John and Dan.

He farmed most of his life, in addition to working for Jahnke Implement, the City of Denison, and as a bus driver for Denison High School. His family was very important to him and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and socializing with his friends. He and Lucy enjoyed camping, vacationing in Colorado and wintering in Texas. In his spare time, he enjoyed simple things such as driving around the country-side and admiring the scenery. He was also a fan of Atlanta Braves Baseball.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Joe Curnyn, and Joe's wife, Marilyn. He is survived by his wife, Lucy of Denison; two sons, John and his wife, Alana of Jefferson; and Dan and his wife, Connie of Denison; five grandchildren, Kris Hagedorn and her husband, Josh of De Soto, Iowa; Tony Curnyn and his wife, Erin of Ankeny; Corey Curnyn and his wife, Lori of Denison; Stephanie Wiese and her husband, Adam of Denison; and Troy Curnyn and his fiancee, Trista Westcott of Denison; three great-grandchildren, Addison and Braden Curnyn of Denison; and Joseph Hagedorn of De Soto, Iowa; two brothers, Robert and his wife, Katie of Denison; and Jim and his wife, Kathy of Omaha; two brothers-in-law, Vurnace Slechta and his wife, Virginia of Cherokee; and Ken Slechta of Sioux City; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Clausen and her husband, Vernie of Mesa, Arizona; and Marita Curnyn of Ft. Worth, Texas; other relatives and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2007 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Fr. Paul Kelly served as Celebrant of the mass and grave side rites held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. Organist Jean Cornelius provided accompaniment for soloist Eldon Hardekopf as he sang "In the Garden," and "On Eagles Wings," and for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Mass servers were Casey and Dylan Curnyn, and J.D. and Nathan Farley served as gift bearers. Eucharistic Ministers were Larry and Becky Schwarte. Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Wimpie Richardson, Everett Carnine, Frank DeWitt, Lyle Frazier, Palmer Volkmann, and Harold Kierscht. Those serving as pallbearers were Patrick Curnyn, Mike Curnyn, Josh Hagedorn, Tony Curnyn, Adam Wiese, Corey Curnyn, Troy Curnyn, and Tom Curnyn. Friday Prayer Services included a Legion of Mary Rosary at 4 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 6 p.m. The family invited everyone in attendance at the mass to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the St. Rose of Lima Altar Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
