Merlin Charles "Merly", son of Emil and Ella (Kittler) Schnoor, was born May 10, 1921, in Shelby County, Iowa. He attended rural school for two years before attending Manilla schools.

In October 1942, Merly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving through November 1945. He was a heavy equipment operator in the Navy Seabees. During the invasion of Iwo Jima, Merly was injured and received the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Manilla and worked for Crawford County.

Merly was united in marriage with Margie Ann Schrum on June 20, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Two children were born to this union. Merly worked at Crawford County for 15 years. He then worked as a Star mail carrier for 8 years, returning to Crawford County as a bridge foreman. During this time frame he also worked for Boeck Construction.

Merly and Margie purchased a motor home and enjoyed touring the country after retirement. He also looked forward to daily coffee with his friends at The Depot or The Rusty Nail. Merly was a member of the Manilla American Legion Post #132, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and served on the Honor Guard for over 60 years. He was also a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Merly died on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Creighton Medical Center, in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 9 days.

Preceding him in death are his parents; sisters LaVonne Anthony, Irene Nelson and Bonnie Waterbury; and brother Melvin Schnoor.

He is survived by his wife Margie Schnoor of Manilla; son Ronald Schnoor and wife Sandy of Manilla; daughter Barbara and husband Philip Anthony of O'Fallon, IL; three grandchildren: Christina Anthony of Seattle, WA; Scott Anthony and wife Sarah of Sikeston, MO; and Heather Anthony of Carbondale, IL; sister Garnett Waterbury of Chula Vista, CA; half-brother Marlin Manford of Jefferson City, MO; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation: Wednesday, March 21, after 5 p.m., family present 5-7 p.m. Funeral services held Thursday, March 22, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla, Ia. Reverend Paul Frank, officiating. Congregational hymns were "How Great Thous Art", "Just As I Am", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Onward Christian Soldiers", Bonnie Lorenzen, Accompanist. Casketbearers were Dale Wight, Kent Gruhn, Tom Wurr, Denny Christensen, Roger Georgius, and Fred Bloom. Interment with Military Honors Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla, Ia. American Legion Post 132 and Emil Ewoldt Post 22, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517. Arrangements by Ohde Funeral Home.
