Harvey James Henderson was born November 16, 1920, the son of Grover and Dora Hedrick Henderson. He died Friday, March 2, 2007 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-six.

Harvey was born in Logan, Iowa and as a child, moved to Deloit, Iowa where he lived with his aunt and uncle, Bill and Cora Wettendorf where he worked on their farm. He received his education in Council Bluffs, Hornick, Iowa and in Deloit, graduating high school from Deloit with the class of 1938.

On December 10, 1944, Harvey was united in marriage to Berniece Schurke at St. John Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Deloit and were blessed with the birth of two children. Harvey and Berniece farmed together until 1960, when they moved to Denison and Harvey began working at Farmland Foods, Inc. until his retirement in 1986.

He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who left his family with many wonderful memories. He was able to fix about anything, he was always happy tinkering with things. He enjoyed square dancing and talking on his C.B radio. He liked sporting events, his favorite was baseball, from the time he played it to when he coached to watching his grandkids play. Harvey really enjoyed walking all the streets of Denison several times over the years. Many people will miss seeing him walk by. He liked to play Bingo where he could visit with his friends, and eating lunch at the Senior Center. He was confirmed as an adult in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunt Cora and uncle Bill Wettendorf who raised him; his wife, Berniece; one brother, Cliff Henderson; one sister, Mae Fischer; and one grandson, Todd Lakner. He is survived by his two children, Dennis and his wife, Marva of Kansas City, Missouri; and Debbie Lakner and her husband, Rick of Denison; four grandchildren, Jill McCloud and her husband, Mickey of Kansas City, Missouri; Amy Namanny and her husband, Matthew of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; Stacey Lakner of Omaha, Nebraska; and Nathan Lakner of Denison; four great-grandchildren, Allison and Emma McCloud of Kansas City, Missouri; and Madeline and Andrew Namanny of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; three brothers, Max Henderson and his wife, Dorothy, Wayne Henderson and his wife, Pat and Art Henderson and his wife, Shirley, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three sisters, Doris Rearick and her husband, Wayne of Lincoln, Nebraska; Phyllis Danburg and her husband, Jerry of St. George, Utah; and Irene Wilms of Warsaw, Missouri; one brother-in-law, Marvin Schurke and his wife, Rose of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Hast and her husband, David, and Genevive Schurke all of Denison; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for the congregational hymns "I'm But A Stranger Here," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus," and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as pallbearers were Dean Thompson, Steve Schurke, Kevin Fink, Kevin Schurke, Brian Zavitz, and Jeff Hast. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
