Denison Bulletin/Review

Teresa K. Mohatt was born in Hanover Township, near Charter Oak, Iowa on December 18, 1915. She passed away at the Manilla Manor on January 23, 2007 at 91 years of age. Teresa was a resident of Vail for many years before entering assisted living and nursing care. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, and participated in the Altar Society and volunteered at the Catholic School there among other church activities. Teresa was a homemaker.

Teresa was preceded in death by her first child, William Joseph "Billy", who died shortly after his birth. Her husband, Vincent J. Mohatt, died in 1955. Teresa raised her three son's Gerald, Richard, and Dennis in Vail.

Raised in a farming family near Charter Oak, Teresa attended rural schools in Hanover Township. She had one sister, Margaret, who preceded her in death. Her parents were Hermann "Dutch" and Margarette Gareis Remmes, who were German and met on the ship The Kaisenn Auguste Victoria bound for America in 1907, and were married shortly afterward. Theresa met her husband, Vince, at a dance with the Lawrence Welk band near Soldier, Iowa. They were married by Father Casey, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, on October 12, 1937. At the time, Vince worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and the young couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming; Grand Island, Nebraska; and Omaha with his railroad positions. He left the railroad in the late 1940's and the family moved to Denison where he operated the Lincoln Club tavern next to the old First National Bank on Broadway. The family moved to a small farm south of Vail for several years in the early 1950's, before moving into Vail where Vince operated a new tavern and pool hall before his untimely death. The family remembers fondly the years on the farm south of Vail, and the wonderful neighbors and friends that were made in Vail.

Teresa is survived by her sons Gerald and wife Robby, from Fairbanks, Alaska; Richard (Dick) and wife Chris from Littleton, Colorado; and Dennis and wife Karen, from Lincoln, Nebraska. She has seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family request any memorials be made in Teresa's name to the Manilla Manor.
