Lloyd William Wessel, age 83, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Morningside Rehab & Care Center in Ida Grove.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Gary Scharrer officiated, with burial following in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Friends called at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Online condolences may be directed to www.christensenhuffman.com.

Born September 11, 1923, in Charter Oak, Iowa, Lloyd William Wessel was the son of Henry and Frieda (Rademacher) Wessel. He was baptized on April 20, 1924, and was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, Iowa.

On December 25, 1941, Lloyd married Lorraine Schultz in Denison, Iowa. The couple farmed in Crawford and Ida Counties for many years. Lloyd was later employed by Midwest Industries for 17 years, retiring due to disability in 1980.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. He loved fishing with his family and playing cards with his grandchildren. He enjoyed woodworking and made picnic tables for his entire family.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; four children and their spouses, Gene and Myra Wessel, Cheryl and Marelle Knudsen, Gailen and Pam Wessel, LaWayne and Barb Wessel, all of Ida Grove; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Gene, Jr., Marc, Gale, Todd, Stacy, Brent, and Tyson; twelve great-grandchildren, Miranda, Mallery, Marty, Madison, Brett, Brandon, Derrick, Dana, Logan, Michael, Lindsey, and Hunter; a brother and his wife, Delmar and Gladys Wessel of Denison; four sisters and their husbands, Esther and Edward Sonnichsen of Denison, Lila Mae and Don Kline of Schleswig, Helen Olson of Deloit, and Leva and Vahn Schumacher of Battle Creek; a step-brother-in-law, Lawrence Gosch of Mapleton; as well as many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Florence Preul, Dorothy Wessel, and Lois Petersen.
