Edgar Henry Kuhlmann was born January 17, 1924, to George and Rose (Neddermeyer) Kuhlmann. He died November 28, 2006, at the age of eighty-two years, ten months, and eleven days.

Edgar "Ed" was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and was always a faithful member. He attended Country School, Hanover No. 9, St. John Parochial School and the Charter Oak High School.

Ed was a lifelong resident of the Charter Oak area, with the exception of the time he served in the United States Army.

On January 27, 1946, Ed was united in marriage to Ruth Igou of Dow City. To this union two children were born. They lived on various farms in the Charter Oak area until they moved to their home in Charter Oak in 1985. Ed continued to farm until 1988, when their farm sale was held and they retired. Ed, with his love of farming worked part-time for Bob Kroll and was always available when others needed help.

Ed served his church over the years as stewardship secretary, trustee, assistant financial secretary and was head usher for many, many years.

He was a member of the Community Club where he served several years on the board of directors. He was an American Legion member of Homer Hall Post #66 and served them as Historian for one term.

Ed had the honor of being named the 1987, Citizen of the Year for Charter Oak.

He was accomplished at refinishing furniture. A piece he was especially proud of was the high chair he rebuilt and refinished for his great-grandchildren. He had the chair when he was a child.

Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, playing cards and visiting with friends. In his retirement years he spent much of his time gardening and took pride in his lawn and flowers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Kenneth and great-grandchild, Christian Mitchell. Ed is survived by his wife Ruth; daughter Diane and husband Darrell Peterson of Cedar Rapids; son Dennis and wife Patty of Council Bluffs; grandchildren Chuck Peterson and wife Denita of Cedar Rapids; Dee Kellems and husband Richard of Rockford, Illinois; Mike Peterson of Williams, Iowa; Matt Kuhlmann of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Dave Mitchell of Aurora, Colorado; Philip Mitchell of Tokyo, Japan; and thirteen great-grandchildren; brother Vernon and wife Bernice of Charter Oak and sister Darlene Marquardt of Eventide, Denison, Iowa; nephews, nieces, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2006 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Marjorie Neddermeyer provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns, "I Know that My Redeemer Lives," and "Amazing Grace." Vocalists Jim and Nancy Jurgens sang the selections, "How Great Thou Art," and "On Eagle's Wings." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren that were unable to attend: Dee Kellems, Philip Mitchell, and Dave Mitchell. Those serving as pallbearers were: Chuck Peterson, Mike Marquardt, Ed Marquardt, Barry Kuhlmann, Matt Kuhlmann, and Mike Peterson. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Homer Hall Post No. 66 of Charter Oak, Iowa. A prayer service was held 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of the arrangements.
