Audrey (Cross) Gehl was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1926 to Lulu and William J. Cross of Dow City, Iowa. Her brothers and sisters included Lawrence, Lillian, Elsie, Les, Della, Gertie, and Bill Cross, all of Dow City.

Audrey attended Dow City-Arion Community Schools in Dow City, and after graduation, attended the Iowa Methodist Medical Center School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing.

She worked briefly as a Registered Nurse at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital prior to meeting and marrying her husband, John Gehl in Dow City. She and Johnny had one son, William John (Bill) Gehl. They also have one granddaughter, Stephanie Gehl, of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

After her marriage to Johnny, Audrey retired from active nursing to dedicate her time to raising her family and working as a housewife in the family home in Dow City.

During her fifty plus years of married life in Dow City, Audrey was active in numerous church activities at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, and the Ladies Auxiliary. Audrey and Johnny took numerous trips to visit family members in Wisconsin, Florida, Illinois, Hawaii, Mexico, and throughout the southwest United States.

Following her husband's death, Audrey remained in the family home in Dow City for a short time, prior to moving to Denison and establishing her residence in assisted living at the Reed House.

After a quickly progressing illness, Audrey moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, where she passed away on Tuesday, November 7, 2006.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 10, 2006 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Paul Kelly officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Dow City Cemetery. Service music was "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer". Those serving as pallbearers were: Mark Laubscher, Richard Cross, Jerry Daniels, Dale Malone, Don Daniels and Ron Cross. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Brasel Hall in Dow City, served by St. Mary's Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
