Wilferd William Schroeder was born September 15, 1922, the son of Henry and Amanda Mohr Schroeder. He died Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-four.

Wilferd was born on a farm near Charter Oak and was baptized in Christ on October 8, 1922 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 5, 1936. He received his education at the Charter Oak Community School. After completing his education he helped on the family farm and drove truck.

On January 31, 1945, Wilferd was united in marriage to Arlene Schroeder at the First Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. The couple settled on a farm west of Charter Oak before moving to a farm two miles east of Charter Oak. Along with farming, Wilferd had a house painting business from 1958 to 1986.

Wilferd was a life long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and also a member of the Crawford County Conservation Board from 1984 to 1991. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a kid at heart, as he enjoyed hiding Easter eggs and scaring kids at Halloween. He had many hobbies such as gardening, woodworking and refinishing antique furniture. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and card playing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Arlene in 2000, one son, Steven in 2005, two brothers, Laverne and Raymond Schroeder and one sister, Lorena Chambers. Survivors include two sons, Michael Schroeder and his wife, Sandra of Coralville; Mark Schroeder of Council Bluffs; two daughters, Lora Heath and her husband, Ben; and Denise Wooten, all of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Dave Stewart and his wife, Shelley of Winona, Minnesota; Jacqueline Nicole Schroeder of North Liberty; Chris Schroeder of Council Bluffs; Kerri Schroeder of Cedar Falls, and Scott Wooten of Omaha, Nebraska; two great-grandchildren, Maren and Gabriel Stewart of Winona, Minnesota; one brother, Virgil Schroeder and his wife, Elaine of Riverside, California; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Richard Merrill officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Brenda Christiansen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art", "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound". Those serving as pallbearers were: Ben Heath, Dave Stewart, Jared Tripp, Jesse Kuhnle, Larry Ketelsen and Ralph Mayer. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.
