Harold Walter Bornhoft was born December 8, 1925, the son of Walter and Maria Will Bornhoft. He died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty.

Harold was born on a farm in Hayes Township near Westside, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed on April 6, 1944 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. He received his education in Hayes Township, District 5, Center School. After completing his education, he worked with his family on the farm. Harold was united in marriage to Irma Gierstorf on February 1, 1948 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. The couple made their home on his family farm and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1954, Harold and Irma moved to her family farm in Schleswig where he continued farming until moving to town in 1994.

He was blessed with the talent of fixing everything and enjoyed working on and overhauling farm machinery. He also enjoyed woodworking and was fond of International tractors. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Patty; one brother, Arlo; two sisters: Ruth in infancy; and Alice Nissen; and one step-sister, Marge Stahl. He is survived by his wife, Irma of Schleswig; four sons: Steven and his wife, Lee of Heron Lake, Minnesota; Randy and his wife, Mary of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois; Kevin and his wife, Sherri of Humboldt, Iowa; and Kent and his wife, Nan of Schleswig; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren; one step-sister, Lois Hansen and her husband, Lyle of Denison; four sisters-in-law: Alice Bornhoft of Manilla; Esther Gierstorf of Schleswig; Marge Lantz of Ida Grove; and Lorraine Groth and her husband, Chester of Schleswig; two brothers-in-law: Roger Nissen of Carroll; and Delbert Gierstorf of Schleswig; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Other service music played was "I Can Only Imagine". Those serving as pallbearers were: Anthony Bornhoft, Lindsay Bornhoft, Amber Mefferd, Gavin Bornhoft, Dakota Thomsen, Virginia Bornhoft, Lukas Bornhoft and Alissa Bornhoft. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.
