Bertha M. Maak

Bertha M. Maak was born in New York City, New York on March 25, 1913, the daughter of Albert Charles and Anna Rosa Weiss Meyer. When she was two years of age the family moved to Iowa and settled in the Buck Grove area where she was raised. She received her education in the rural schools at Buck Grove and the Manilla High School. Following her education she was employed in domestic work in the area.

On January 22, 1941, Bertha was united in marriage with Henry Delos Maak at the Methodist Parsonage in Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children, Donald, Diane and a stillborn son. Following their marriage Henry and Bertha farmed for one year north of Vail, six years near Buck Grove and one year near Deloit. In 1949, they moved to Denison where Bertha was a busy homemaker and wife, caring for her family. After her family was raised she was employed doing domestic work for various Denison residents. Bertha and Henry had the pleasure of celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary January 22, 1991.

Henry died April 14, 1991, and Bertha continued to remain in their home in Denison.

Bertha greatly enjoyed her membership in the First United Methodist Church in Denison and the United Methodist Women Circles. She especially enjoyed spending her spare time with her family, socializing with friends, crocheting, quilting, canning, working crossword puzzles and baking bread and cinnamon rolls to share with family and friends.

Bertha died Monday evening, September 4, 2006, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had attained the age of 93 years, 5 months and 9 days.

Including her parents, Albert and Anna Meyer, and her husband, Henry Maak, Bertha was preceded in death by two sons, Donald Maak in 1948 and a stillborn son in 1956, two sisters, Margaret Holm and Esther Meyer and one brother, Glenn Meyer.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include one daughter and husband, Diane and Albert Hester of Denison, Iowa, three grandchildren and their spouses, Anne and Dale Neumann of Denison, Iowa, Christine and Todd Briggle of Schleswig, Iowa, and Michael and Allison Hester of Little Rock, Arkansas; eleven great grandchildren, Jake, Nick, Wil, Ben, Andrew, Alex, Ethan, Abigail, Seth, Hans and Roth; one brother, Kenneth Meyer and wife, Marge of Denison, Iowa; one sister, Phyllis Weaver of Denison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. On Thursday, September 7, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by Eldon Hardekopf singing, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "Because He Lives" and "Softly and Tenderly" with Nancy Miles serving as pianist. Pallbearers included Todd Briggle, Dale Neumann, Jake Blunk, Nick Blunk, Wil Blunk and Seth Neumann. Interment was at the Oakland Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment the family cordially invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
