Janet,

The name Detlefsen (more commonly spelled Dethlefsen), is a name often found in Schlesvig and the Frisian islands. The North Frisian Institute has some information on some emigrants who left the islands. Their website is located at:

While I did not see your Andrew listed, you could write the institute to see if he was listed under one of the other Dethlefsens (his father). It takes them awhile to write back, so be patient.
