Kris,

In the 1860 census for Marysville, Yuba Co., California, 12-year-old James Claiborn [Jr.] is listed alone in the large, mixed household of William Markey. James' elder brother, Lafayette, is also listed in Marysville, CA, in another household. By 1870, James is listed with his brother, Perry, in Sutter Twp. of Sutter Co., California. This suggests to me that James [Sr.] and Ann were dead before 1860. Otherwise, at age 12, James would most likely still have been living with them. I have not been able to find any proof of this, but it may explain why you can't find them. Good Luck!
