Arlene Johnson

WYOMING, Iowa — Arlene D. Johnson, 80, of Wyoming, died Sunday at Silvercrest, Anamosa.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, with the Rev. Timothy Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Wyoming Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lahey Funeral Home, Wyoming.

She was born March 18, 1925, to Carl J. and Anna M. Stender Stender in Clinton. She married Harry E. Johnson in 1946. They divorced in 1967.

She was educated in rural Clinton County schools and graduated from Andrew High School in 1942. She attended the University of Dubuque. She also attended night school classes at Kirkwood Community College.

She taught in rural schools for two years after attending the University of Dubuque.

She moved to Wyoming in 1965.

She worked as a domestic for two years. She also was a secretary with the Wyoming Mutual Telephone Co. in October of 1967 where she worked until her retirement in 1991.

She was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church and the Mary Rebecca Circle. She participated in the Piece Makers quilting group and belonged to several card clubs. She also volunteered at the Wyoming Museum and Wyoming Library.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Carole (Robert) Hesse of Phoenix, Mrs. Linda (Paul) Thomsen of Dubuque and Margaret “Peg” Houdek of Gravois Mills, Mo.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Carlyle (Nellie) Stender of Maquoketa.

Memorials may be given to Zion American Lutheran Church, Camp Courageous or the American Cancer Society.
