John B. Acke, 92, of Clinton, IA formerly of Moline, died December 16, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, IA.
Services will be 9:30 am Tuesday at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline and 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Visitation is 3-6 pm Monday at the funeral home with a combined rosary and Public and Catholic Order of Foresters at 5:00 pm. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, East Moline. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church preserving our treasurers.
John was born October 22, 1913 in Moline the son of Henry and Katherine Hollebosch Acke. He married Florence VanDenBerghe on February 6, 1937 in Moline. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2005. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Specialist Firefighter Petty Officer Second Class.
Mr. Acke retired as Assistant Fire Chief of the Moline Fire Department after 39 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline, Catholic Order of Foresters for Sacred Heart Court #1691 and received the Legion of Honor, American Legion Post #246, Moline for 54 years, Friend Circle Club, East End Bolder’s Club, Belgian Culture Center, Western League Rolle Bolle Club, Resurrection Choir at Sacred Heart Church, Retirees Volunteer Work at Church, and member of the Ex-Service Men’s Club, Moline. John was a former member of Senior Choir for 43 years. He was an avid Rolle Bolle Player and traveled extensively thru out the US and foreign countries.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Mary and David Romont of Clinton, IA, daughter-in-law, Sherry Acke of Carbondale, Co., 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Peter VanDenBerghe of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Paul and John Acke, sister Annie Ennis and a brother Albert Acke. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.deroofuneralhome.com.
