October 10, 1940 – December 4, 2005

Thomas L. “Hooker”Ryan, 65, of Cuba City, Wisconsin, died Sunday, December 4, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2005, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Cuba City with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Casey Funeral Home in Cuba City where the parish wake service will be at 3:00 p.m.

Tom was born on October 10, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Raymond “Gates” and Grace (Bingham) Ryan. He attended St. Raphael’s Grade School, Loras Academy, Wahlert High School and Mercy School of Radiology. He married Karen Koppes on October 5, 1963. He was director of radiology for 23 years at Cuba City Medical Center and later at Southwest Health Center in Cuba City and Platteville. Tom also did locum tenum work in radiology throughout the state. Tom and his wife owned and operated “Hooker’s Corner Bar” in Cuba City for 12 years. Because of his laryngectomy in 1996 the business was sold and his last employment was at The Finley Hospital.

Tom was a charter member of the Cuba City Area Rescue Squad and an EMT for 10 years. He was also a member of the Cuba City Lions Club where he served as secretary, St. Rose of Lima Parish, the American Registry of Radiological Technologists and the Wisconsin Society of Radiological Technologists. One of his great joys was being 3rd District Director of the Tavern League of Wisconsin. He was a charter member of Cole Acres County Club where he golfed. He was a member of the Cuba City Chamber of Commerce where along with some other good Irishmen and ladies, he organized the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration in Cuba City.

Survivors include his wife, Karen, of Cuba City, Wisconsin; his children and grandchildren who were the joy of his life, Tim & Stacey Ryan, Megan and Sean, of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Michelle & Craig Bartelt, Adam, Ryan, Krystin and Jarad, of Helenville, Wisconsin, Roberta & Ed Gilkes, Samantha and Derek, of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Matt & Claire Ryan, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Joe & Michele Ryan, Cody, Delaney and Emily, of Cuba City, Wisconsin; two sisters, Darlene Kiley, of Clinton, Iowa, and Nancy Mohr, of DeWitt, Iowa; a brother, Dan (Doris) Ryan, East Dubuque, Illinois; four sisters-in-law, Leona Ryan and Mary Ryan, both of Dubuque, Iowa, Dolores Ryan, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, and Sandy Burke, of Des Moines, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Brewer and Marlene Adams; two brothers, Raymond “Boz” and Donald; and three brothers-in-law, Gene Brewer, Richard Adams, and Larry Mohr.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Drs. Peter Alt, Duane Caylor, and Darcey Putz, the Cuba City Area Rescue Squad, and to all staff in ICU, SSU, Rehab & Home Health, and to Father Dave Flanagan.

Memorials may be made out to the St. Rose Endowment Fund or Special Olympics.
