The Clinton Herald March 22, 1954 The body of Stewart W. Towle, 77, former Clinton businessman who died Friday at Clearwater, Fla., will be returned here Wednesday morning. It will be taken to the Bragonier-Fay funeral home where friends may call beginning at noon. Delphic chapter, Knights Rose Croix, will conduct Masonic rites at 3 p.m. that day. Committal services and burial will be in Springdale cemetery. A native of Clinton, Mr. Towle was born Jan. 29, 1877, a son of Phineas S. and Mary B. Towle. He attended Clinton schools and St. John's Military academy, Delafield, Wis. During World War I he served as a Y.M.C.A. secretary with the transport division in the Meuse, Argonne and Verdun sectors. He was associated with the Towle and Hypes company department stores, serving as vice-president. He was also associated with several firms in the automotive industry. His marriage to Zella White of Evanston, Ill., took place June 11, 1900. Mr. Towle was a 30-year member of Emulation Lodge No. 255, A.F. & A.M., and also a 50-year member of DeMolay Consistory. At one time he had been associated with the Chamber of Commerce, War Dads and Boy Scout council. He was also a member of St. John Episcopal church, the Kiwanis club and the Kaaba temple, Davenport. Survivors include his wife; a son, Col. S.W. Towle Jr., U.S.A. retired, Washington, D.C.; a grandson, Charles Towle, now serviing with the army, and a brother, Henry S. Towle, Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles B. Towle.

Funeral services for Stewart W. Towle, 77, former Clinton businessman who died Friday at Clearwater, Fla., were held at 3 p.m. today in the Bragonier-Fay funeral home. Delphic chapter, Knights Rose Croix, conducted Masonic rites, with C.W. Ocker in charge. Rev. R.T. Dickerson of St. John's Episcopal church officiated at committal services in Springdale cemetery. Organist was Miss Marguerite Hypes. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Dr. F.O. Kerschner, Walter D. Morris Jr., W.T. Oakes, Dwight S. Seaman, Homer I. Smith, Merritt L. Sutton, A.W. Hansen and Milo J. Gabriel. Among those attending from out of the city were: Mrs. Stewart W. Towle, Clearwater, Fla.; Col. and Mrs. S.W. Towle Jr., Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Lyman Ellis, Chicago, Ill.
