The Clinton Herald Wednesday July 31, 1912 p. 6 Another of the few remaining early settlers of Clinton county and Lyons, Virtus Lund, aged 80 years, notary public and justice of the peace here for the past several years and interested in many other business enterprises, died Wednesday morning at 5:30 o'clock at Mercy hospital where he has been confined since July 15. Death occurred following two operations for strangular rupture, an ailment with which he suffered many years, the operations occurring only a few days apart, July 15 and last Thursday. The death came as a great shock to the immediate family and the many relatives and friends as it was thought that he was improving and would be able to be about soon. The funeral arrangements have not as yet been made as the family is awaiting the arrival of Virtus Lund, jr., and family, who are residing in Three Forks, Montana. Services will probably be held at the late residence, 422 North Fifth street and interment will be in Oakland cemetery. In this city the deceased was prominent, well known and respected by all who knew him. His generosity and kind heartedness won for him the position of city treasurer of Lyons, which position he held for several terms, leaving the office in the year of 1885. Shortly after this he was a candidate on the democratic ticket for county treasurer. He was elected and held this position for three terms. Virtus Lund was born in Eckernforde, Schleswig Holstein, Germany, September 23, 1832, and came to America in the year of 1853, on the ship Herschel, the trip taking sixty-three days from Hamburg to New York. Arriving in the country he went to Zanesville, Ohio, where he remained and worked with a relative for a while. In the your of 1854, he come to Lyons, arriving here May 19. He clerked in a store operated by C.D. Wohlenberg until the year 1857, and he then moved to Mitchell county, Iowa, where he was interested in a store business. He returned to Lyons in 1859 and from that time until 1869, he was connected with the Rice Brothers establishment here and later became a partner in that business in Sabula for a while and while there met Miss Sarah Amelia Westbrook, who on August 31, 1864, became his wife. Mrs. Lund passed away in the year 1905. From 1891 until 1900 he was cashier of the Citizen's National bank of Lyons, this institution later being absorbed by what is now the First National bank of Lyons. In 1902 be became notary public and justice of the peace in Lyons, positions he was holding at the time of his death. At the time of his death he was also president of the Oakland cemetery association, vice president of the Clinton public library, president of the Old Settlers' association and a member of the German society and an attendant at the Lutheran church. The deceased leaves to mourn his death, four children, Virtus Lund, jr., of Three Forks, Mont., Charles Lund residing in Illinois, Fred Lund at home in this city and Mrs. Ella Warner of Chicago, also one brother, Justus Lund of Lyons.
