Donald R. Nerhus 01/14/2005 TORONTO, Iowa -- Donald R. Nerhus, Toronto, Iowa, died Wednesday afternoon, January 12, 2005, at home. Donald Rae Nerhus was born August 12, 1937, in Calamus, Iowa, the son Lars and Margaret (Raiber) Nerhus. Don worked at I-80 Truck Stop doing tire repair for many years. He married the former Betty Louise Steines on May 6, 1978, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. The couple resided in the area until moving to Colorado in 1989 where Don worked in apartment maintenance. They moved to Toronto in 1994. Don then worked at Banta's Trailers in Walcott and then Theisen's in DeWitt, until retirement in April 2004. He was a 20-year member of the Calamus Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Toronto Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for 10 years. He was a member of Wapsi Oaks and Little Bear Country Clubs. Don enjoyed golfing and working crossword and word seek puzzles. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was an avid Hawkeyes football and basketball fan. Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 27 years, Betty; his children, Ron (Linda) Steines, Toronto, Shirley (Jerry) Emmert, Calamus, Susan Beuthien, Grand Mound, Bonnie (Tom) Booth, New Boston, Illinois, and Deb Grau, Wheatland; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Reginald (Chris) Nerhus, Fort Madison, and Harold (Norma) Nerhus, Grand Mound. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Ken Beuthien. Friends may call at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, from 3 until 8 p.m. today. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the funeral home. The Rev. Sarah Kretzmann will officiate. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. Pallbearers will be Chris Beuthien, Matt Beuthien, Jeremy Scheper, Steve Fred, Ryan Steines and Adam Grau. Honorary pallbearers will be Hal Nerhus and Reg Nerhus.
