Irwin Bishop

ELIZABETH, Ill. — Irwin Bishop, 88, of Elizabeth, died Sunday at the Elizabeth Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Elizabeth. Burial will be in the Elizabeth Cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, and one hour prior to the service time at the church Wednesday.

He was born May 11, 1917, to Orville Martin “O.M.” and Gail Virginia Irwin Bishop in Elizabeth. He married Aimee C. Dinsmore on June 21, 1953, in Galena, Ill.

He graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1935. He received business training in Rockford, Ill.

He served in the 9th Air Defense Command of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

Prior to and after his military service, he worked for J.C. Penney’s. He later moved back to Elizabeth to take over the family business, Bishop’s Busy Big Store.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elizabeth, Elizabeth American Legion Post and Elizabeth Cavanaugh Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David (Deborah) Bishop of Decorah and Gary Bishop of Dubuque; one sister, Gwendolyn L. Schabel of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Elizabeth Fire Department and emergency medical technicians.
