Leon E. Pladna

DES MOINES — Leon E. Pladna, 88, of Des Moines and formerly of Clinton, died Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Prince of Peace Parish, Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Anthony Herold officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home, Clinton. Burial will be in the St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ed, Mike and Kevin Pladna, Regan Brader and Laz Hernandez.

He was born November 9, 1917, in Clinton to Edward and Grace Snivley Pladna. He married Loretta McMahon on Oct. 12, 1941, in Clinton. She died in 1984.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in the artillery and was in the second wave to land at Normandy on D-Day.

He was a millwright with E.I. DuPont for 31 years before retiring in 1979.

He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, Loyal Order of Moose and American Legion in Thomson, Ill.

Survivors include two sons, Dan (Evie) Pladna of Des Moines and Ed Pladna of Augusta, Ga.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Price of Waukegan, Ill.; and two brothers, Tom (Phyllis) Pladna of Fulton, Ill., and Jack Pladna of Waukegan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son and one brother.
