The Rev. Joseph "Jack" Denning, 70, of Davenport, died Friday at his home.

Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Catholic Church, Houghton.Burial will be in the St. John Cemetery, Houghton. Visitation will be today from 3 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church. The Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with local arrangements. The Link Funeral Home, West Point, is assisting the family with funeral and burial services in Houghton.

He was born July 6, 1935, in Houghton to Joseph James and Nellie Freesmeier Denning.

He attended St. John's School, Houghton; Iowa State University, Ames; and St. Ambrose College, Davenport. He completed four years of seminary study at North American College, Rome, Italy, where he was ordained into the priesthood on Dec. 18, 1960.

He served as parochial vicar with St. Mary, Albia; St. Patrick, Clinton; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Bettendorf. He served as pastor with St. Mary, West Burlington; Sacred Heart, Newton; St. Wencelaus, Iowa City; St. Joseph, DeWitt; St. Paul the Apostle, Davenport; and Church of the Visitation, Camanche. He retired from Camanche in 2004. His Diocesan responsibilities included: Priest Personal Board, Marriage Tribunal of Second Instance Judge, Diocesan Consultor, Presbyteral Council, Catholic Messenger Board and served as vicar for the Vicareate of Iowa City.

Survivors include his sisters, Ruth Mertens of Burlington, Mrs. LaVerne (Vernon) Coffey of Fort Madison, Sr. Jane Denning, OSF, of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Phyllis (Paul) Steffensmeier of Donnellison; and one brother, James (Eileen) Denning of Houghton; and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Catholic school of the donor's choice.
