Mrs. Esther D. Ploog, 87, Charlotte, Iowa, died Thursday evening, April 7, 2005, at Mercy Hospital-North, Clinton, Iowa.
Mrs. Ploog, the former Esther Dorothy Ketelsen, was born December 10, 1917, in rural Charlotte, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Selma (Andresen) Ketelsen. She married Vernon William Ploog on September 15, 1937, in Charlotte. The couple farmed in rural Charlotte, and Esther also worked at the Charlotte School and Northeast Schools as a cook. Vernon preceded Esther in death October 5, 1989.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlotte, the Ladies Aid Circle, the Church Fellowship Club and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Esther was also a member of various card clubs, the American Legion Auxiliary, delivered Meals on Wheels in the Charlotte area, was a respite care volunteer and a volunteer at the Charlotte Web.
Surviving are her children, Verdella (Mrs. George) Marik, Marseilles, Illinois; Ellen (Mrs. David) Bielenberg, Charlotte; Randy (Kristi) Ploog, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; and Rick (Linda) Ploog, Sherrard, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Velma Rickertsen, Charlotte; a brother, Ronald (Betty Jo) Ketelsen, Clinton; and a daughter-in-law, Jan Ploog, Camanche.
In addition to her husband, Vernon, Esther was preceded in death by a son, Dale, her parents, a granddaughter, Jennifer Ploog, sisters, Alta Passig, Viola Ketelsen and Loretta Ketelsen, and brothers, Emil Ketelsen, LeRoy Ketelsen, LaVerne Ketelsen, Edwin Ketelsen, Arlo Ketelsen, Raymond Ketelsen, Alva Ketelsen and Donald Ketelsen.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3 until 7 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2005. Service of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2005, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlotte. The Rev. Terry Ellis will officiate. Interment will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Shane Marik, Byron Bielenberg, Byrne Bielenberg, Bryce Bieleneberg, Matt Ploog, Tony Ploog, Kendall Ploog and Dale Ploog.
