Dr. Alfonso D. Torres, M.D., 80 of Clinton, passed away Monday, September 5, 2022 at Park Visita – Camanche.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church with a reception to follow at The Lonergan Group, 132 6th Avenue South. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the church.

Alfonso Diaz Torres was born on August 2, 1942, in Polotitlán de la Ilustración, Mexico, the son of Ricardo and Amparo (Diaz) Torres. He studied medicine at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City where graduated top of his class and went on to train at The Harvard affiliated Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Boston, and at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. where he also had a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology. Dr. Torres was a pediatrician at Bluff Medical Center in Clinton for 16 years and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Michigan State University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he also practiced pediatric nephrology for 20 years.

On March 16, 1970, he married Martha Fernandez Grenno in Boston. They raised three children, Leandro, Rodrigo, and Gabriella.

Dr. Torres had a passion for gardening and walking along the Mississippi River. He loved to watch the eagles at Lock and Dam 13, hike the trails at Palisades Park, and go for drives while listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Patsy Cline. He enjoyed music and singing, grilling in the backyard, and sharing a good story over a bottle of Negra Modelo beer. He loved taking trips around the world with his wife and was an avid reader of biographies of important historical figures. He was fiercely proud of his American citizenship and his Mexican heritage. He was a devoted husband and father, and above all else, he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife: Martha of Clinton; three children: Leandro of Concord, California, Rodrigo of Los Angeles, California, and Gabriella of Clinton; and several brothers and sisters in Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister: Martha.

Memorials can be made to the Pediatric Nephrology Department at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.
