Clarine Batey Gereau was born February 10, 1920, in Maquoketa, Iowa, the daughter of Eldon and Mary (Edwards) Cram. She graduated Valedictorian from Welton Public School, attended Maquoketa Junior College, earned a BA in education at Fresno State College, in Fresno, CA, and her MA in Library Science at The University of Iowa. Clarine married the love of her life, Roy F. Gereau, in Bethesda, MD on January 25, 1946. After living several years in Montana and California, the couple returned to Iowa in 1964. She was a dedicated teacher for many years and was later employed as a school librarian, retiring after 41 years in 1986 from Central Community School District, in DeWitt. Clarine was passionate about her teaching and librarian positions, and was well loved by her students.

Clarine had a curious mind and was a voracious reader. She had a collection of more than 10,000 books. One of her greatest joys was her continuing quest for knowledge where she explored history, science, politics and the world through her books. That quest for adventure and knowledge also nurtured a love of travel - she and Roy traveled extensively and visited nearly every continent. She would share that her greatest love and accomplishment was her family. She was a dedicated mother and loved her children dearly and cherished the time she spent with them. She loved her home and was very proud of it. Clarine will be remembered as an amazing, intelligent, fun, and loving woman.

Surviving are her children, Roy E. (Charlotte Taylor) Gereau of St Louis, Missouri, Ellen (David) Mayberry of DeWitt, Harry (Lucia) Gereau of Fusagusaga of Colombia South America, and Amy (Kevin) Broadfoot of Charlotte; grandchildren, Siobhan Topping, Anne (Robert) Yanez, Melissa (Bryan) Crowley, Sebastian (Tara Murphy) Gereau, Michelle Gereau, James Broadfoot and Mary (Nick) Weber; three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ava Crowley and Lienna Broadfoot; her brother and his wife, Robert and Iola Batey and many nieces and nephews.
