Neil A. Mason
August 2022

Neil A. Mason, 65, of Calamus, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, August 26, 2022.

Neil was born March 3, 1957, to Arnold and Grace (Bronner) Mason in DeWitt, Iowa. He graduated from Calamus High School in 1975 and attended Muscatine Community College. He later returned to the Calamus area to join his father and uncle in farming. Neil was united in marriage to Jane Ryan on October 4, 1986, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Iowa. The couple resided on the family farm in rural Calamus. In addition to farming, he worked in crop insurance for over 25 years and recently retired as manager of P&K Midwest in DeWitt. Neil was very proud to have raised his family on the same farm where he grew up, and continued lending a hand.

Neil was an avid golfer at Wapsi Oaks, where he loved Wednesdays and taught each of his children to golf. Neil treasured baseball, especially coaching his son Ryan at Calamus Wheatland, and cheering for the Cubs. He enjoyed more than 30 years of Fall Saturdays at Kinnick Stadium watching the Hawkeyes and tailgating. Neil rarely turned down a slow pitch softball game, a karaoke microphone, or a cold beer(s). He cherished time with his grandchildren, passing on his love for sports. Neil had an ease in making friends wherever he went. He and Jane enjoyed camping and boating at their favorite spot “Bobbers” where they made many new friends.

Surviving are his loving wife, Jane; children Nicole (Matt) Kroul of Solon, Ryan (Holle Michoski) Mason of DeWitt, Emily (fiancé Jason Kay) Mason of Wheatland; grandchildren, Leighton, Brady, Jacie, and Reese Kroul, and Kruz Kay; sisters, Nila Mason, and Ellen (Charles) Freese; and other extended family. He will also be dearly missed by the entire Ryan family, who brought him great joy and friendships.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Reid, and Uncle Preston.

Visitation will be from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2022, in the church. Burial following at Kvindherred Cemetery in rural Calamus.
