Joseph B. Weis (1949-2021)

Joseph B. Weis, age 72, of Clinton, IA, formerly of Preston, IA, passed away Thursday August 26th surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday September 7th, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Preston. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Joe was born in Clinton, IA, July 29th, 1949, son of Joe and Lorina (Jacobs) Weis. He graduated from Preston High School in 1967. After High School, Joe worked construction and helped to build Hawthorne Woods Apts. Joe entered the US Navy from 1967 - 1971 and served aboard the USS Sarsfield DD 837 during the Vietnam War. After serving his country Joe returned to construction.

Joe was a machinist for 24 years with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and worked for several years with Valley Distributing as a truck driver. Joe enjoyed hunting, trapping, and fishing. He was an avid Hawkeye and Cub fan. Joe loved gardening and always shared growing tips with family and friends.

Joe is survived by three brothers, Vincent Weis of Denver, CO, Gerald (Sally) Weis of Harpers Ferry, IA, and Donald (Jean) Weis of Camanche; four sisters, Mary Ann Huebner of Vancuver, WA, Bernice (Ron) Gerdts of Clinton, Jo Ann (Bob) Weems of San Antonio, TX, and Bernadette Hankemeier of Miles, IA; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend Brooke Richardson. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lorina; sister-in-law Lisa Weis; brother-in-law Steve Hankemeier; and nephew Troy Weis.

Joe’s family would like to give a special thank you to all the staff and the Iowa City VA hospital for the amazing work they do.
