Joyce Anne Petersen Hopkins (Joyce Mouratides, Joyce Bach), 92, of Evans, Georgia, formerly of Camanche and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Miami, Florida, passed away Saturday, April 3, 2021 at her home in Evans, Georgia.
Funeral services will be May 14, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home, Camanche, Iowa, followed by burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Camanche. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the service time at the funeral home. Online sentiments may be left at www.snellzornig.com.
Joyce Anne Petersen was born December 9, 1928 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Lucille (Quick) Petersen, and grew up in Camanche. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1946, and attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon from 1946-49. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950, and a Master's degree in Fine Arts, specializing in Art History and Painting, in 1953. She taught at the University and at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
From 1959 to 1966, Joyce taught Art in the Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley, Iowa Public Schools. She moved to Miami, Florida in 1966, and taught Art Appreciation and Art History at Miami-Dade College until 1972. She earned a Florida secondary teaching credential in Reading from the University of Miami in 1979, and taught Reading, English, Art, and English for Speakers of Other Languages at Miami Edison Senior High School until her retirement in 1995. She resided in Martinez and Evans, Georgia for the past 20 years. Her artwork has appeared in many galleries, exhibitions, shows, and private collections.
Joyce is survived by her daughter with first husband Nicos Mouratides, Theano (Robert) Petersen of Seattle, Washington; sons with third husband Alfred I. Hopkins, Eric (Michelle) Hopkins of Sierra Madre, California and Hans "John" (Diane) Hopkins of Evans, Georgia; grandchildren Lucia Ersfeld and Flora Petersen, Connor and Emma Hopkins, and Samuel and Eleanor Hopkins; sister Nancy Johnson of Moline, Illinois; nephews Larry, Randy, Scott, and Mark Johnson; and niece Jane McNulty.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 49 years Alfred I. Hopkins in 2015, and her daughter with second husband A.J. Bach, Diane Bach, in 1989.
