Rosalyn was born October 11, 1931, in Welton, IA, the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy (Petersen) Hass. She attended Welton schools, and later, Iowa Teacher's College, in Cedar Falls. Upon earning her teaching certificate, Rosalyn taught in Elvira for one year, before marrying Glen L. Mommsen on December 30, 1951, at Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt, IA. The young couple soon started their family, and Rosalyn settled into life as a homemaker and farmer’s wife. She and Glen went on to have 7 children.
Rosalyn was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was active in Martha’s Circle. She and her friends spent countless hours quilting, serving luncheons and participating in mission projects. She volunteered for the American Heart Association, Farm Bureau Women, and Cattleman’s Association. Rosalyn was a dedicated Hospice volunteer for many years for Mercy Hospice. She was a gifted gardener who grew beautiful flowers and held the distinction of being a Master Gardener. She often shared her produce and baked goods with friends and neighbors, especially her asparagus, potato salad, and applesauce. Rosalyn was an avid reader and life-long learner. She was always taking classes and earned her Associates Degree of Arts when she was in her 50’s. She also prided herself on never missing a birthday, anniversary or special event and sent hundreds of cards with hand written notes over the years. When Rosalyn’s health began to deteriorate and she required assistance, she was gracious and thankful for her caregiver’s assistance and never missed the opportunity to offer her blessings and share her faith. She believed that her life should reflect her faith and love of God.
Rosalyn will be dearly missed by her children, Alyce (Darrell) Seaba, of Goldfield, IA, Jeralyn (Daniel) Jargo, of Stillwater, MN, Norlin (Denise) Mommsen, of DeWitt, IA, Mardell (Reginald) Mommsen Flippin, of Clinton, IA, and Lynette (Dale Spencer) Sievers, of Urbandale, IA; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Myron Hass, of Jacksonville, FL; and two sisters-in-law, Alberta Mommsen and Myrna Hass.
