Jan "Jon" Cornelius Dirk VanMaanen, 69, of Clinton, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 18, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. At Jan's request, no funeral services will be held. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date. Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting snellzornig.com.
Jan was born in Malang, Indonesia on September 13, 1951 to Claudia Reygers and Adriaan VanMaanen. At the age of 9, Jan and his family relocated to Clinton, IA where Jan would reside for the next several years. Jan graduated from Clinton High School in 1971 and he went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era.
Jan was employed as an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 145 for several years. After retiring from the electrical trade, Jan worked as a manager at the Super Wash and later as a custodian at Unity Christian School in Fulton. Jan was most recently employed as a delivery driver at Gateway Supply in Clinton.
On August 22, 2015, Jan was united in marriage to his longtime companion and love, Janet (Geltz) Jones. Together Jan and Jan enjoyed dancing, going on "road trips", vacationing to warm and sunny locations, spending time with their friends and most importantly, spending time with their family and grandchildren.
Jan loved music, especially music from the 60's, and often served as the "deejay" for gatherings with family and friends. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking his signature dishes for his family and friends. Jan was an avid fan of both the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed the game of pool and participated in leagues throughout the Clinton area for several years. Jan loved the game of golf and over the last several years, played the game nearly every day the weather allowed. Jan will be dearly missed for his warm and fun-loving personality.
Jan is survived by his wife Jan VanMaanen, three daughters, Kristine (Merritt) Price of Chicago, IL, Melissa (Garrick) O'Brien of Albia, IA, and Andrea (Jay) Gillette of Chicago, IL, one step-daughter, Jaime (TJ) Naughton of Clinton, one step-son, Brian (Megan) Jones of Fulton, 14 grandchildren, mother, Claudia VanMaanen, two sisters, Sylvia (George) Silva of Clinton, Adrianna "Didy" Trimble of Redwood City, CA, and several nieces and nephews. Jan is proceeded in death by his father.
Memorials may be made to the family for a charity of their choice.
