Fred Donovan, 70, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus in Davenport, from complications of multiple myeloma.
Frederick Joseph Donovan was born January 12, 1950, in Clinton, Iowa, to Arnold and Lucille (Gregorich) Donovan. Fred graduated from Aquin High School in Cascade, then graduated from Loras College in Dubuque. He served in the Navy, stationed in Pensacola, Florida. Fred worked several years for John Deere, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 26 years. He married Elvira Doty on April 26, 1980, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. The couple resided in DeWitt, raising 4 children.
Fred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #238, and the local unions of John Deere and the USPS. He was also a lifetime member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa District 21. He took pride in serving his community, especially hosting the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. He enjoyed reading, relaxing, and riding motorcycles. He loved spending time with his family and numerous friends. He was known to crack a cold beer and listen music in his man-cave.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elvira; children, Bob (Marina) Current of Cincinnati, Ohio, Katrina (Rob) Copeland of Albany, Illinois, Jennifer Donovan, and Rebecca Donovan both of Clinton; grandchildren, Joe DiMuzio and Natalie Coors, Bobby and Blake Current, and Seth and Logan Copeland; great-grandson, Jackson Coors; siblings, Tom Donovan of Milan, Illinois, Paula Strang of Phoenix, Arizona, Janet (Jerry) Feeney of Dubuque, Steve (Shannon) Donovan of Tipton; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Lou Ottman.
A rolling visitation, allowing 15 people at a time, will be held from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 3, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating, and will be live streamed at https://www.facebook.com/schultzfuneralhomes/live.
Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Garryowen, Iowa, at a later date.
For those unable to attend at this time, a celebration of life will be announced in the spring.
Memorials are suggested to the DeWitt Referral Center, the Frances Banta Waggoner Library, and the St. Patrick Cemetery Fund.
