Dr. D. R. "Doc" Schumacher, age 95 of Clinton, passed away Friday, June 19, 2020 at Bickford Cottage. In following Doc's wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A private family service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 29th at the Pape Funeral Home. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday following the service.
Doc was born in Clinton on December 28, 1924, the son of Herbert and Marie (Nissen) Schumacher. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Doc graduated from Clinton High School where on the football field he was known as "Dynamite Don." He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees during W.W. II with campaigns on Tinian and the Mariana Islands. Doc attended Iowa State on a football scholarship and received a degree in Engineering. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa Medical School. Doc was a family practitioner in Clinton from 1955 to 1991. He married Deb Kruger on June 2, 1984 in Clinton. Doc was the longest continuous member of the YMCA. He enjoyed playing volleyball and coached the sport at Clinton Community College. He was an avid golfer and tennis player, having won a city doubles championship. Doc had a passion for ice hockey, playing in the Dubuque Senior Saints League, and competing in his last game at the age of 80. He followed the Chicago Blackhawks and Hawkeyes.
Doc is survived by his wife Deb; 7 children, Jan Schumacher of Austin, TX, Dan Schumacher of Davenport, Ken (Diane) Schumacher of Iowa City, David Schumacher of Iowa City, Dr. Rich (Amanda) Schumacher of Schueyville, Steve Schumacher of Clinton and Sherri (Matt) Gelvin of Omaha, NE; 3 stepchildren, Kim (Don) Hansen of Fountain Inn, SC, Krista (Steve) Cagley of Clinton, and Kurt (Brenda) Daehler of Clinton; 13 grandchildren, Dan Jr., Alanna, Karitsa, Mitchell, Madeline, Chloe, Connor, Cole, Carlee, Lakin, Lauryn, Connor and Cody; 4 great grandchildren, Mya, E.J., Miracle and Dale and a brother, Raymond Schumacher of New Braunfels, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials made in Doc's name to the Alzheimer's Association.
