Early morning on April 16th our beloved sister and aunt, Verna (Verna K) Shields, left us to join Mom and Dad and all our grandparents in Heaven. Due to the CoVid-19 pandemic, there will be no visitation or funeral services. The family is discussing the logistics of a virtual service via Zoom Conferencing at a future date. Honoring her wish’s, cremation rites have been accorded. Lemke Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
Verna was born March 23, 1958 in Clinton, Iowa, the youngest child and only daughter of Lester Sr. and Virginia (Hardison) Shields. She was educated in the Northeast Community School District where she graduated in 1976. Many years later she went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Ashford University.
Verna worked the longest for ARA Services, filling vending machines at local industrial plants, but more often being the one to tease and provoke the plant employees. Physical ailments forced her into disability in her later years. For many years Verna volunteered with the Crisis Pregnancy Center, the Clinton County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and most recently as a Court Appointed Services Advocate (CASA) by advocating for children living in abusive situations.
Verna faithfully attended River Church and was known and loved by many of her church family.
She is survived by brothers Lester, Jr. (Joanne) Shields of Clinton, Rev. Mike (MonaRe) Shields of Pembroke Pines, FL, Dr. Ric (Sheila) Shields of Tulsa, OK, and nieces and nephews Becky (Shields) Buhman, Brian Shields, Kristi (Shields) Northup, Elizabeth (Shields) Farina, Travis Shields and Tara Shields.
She was preceded in death by both her parents, all grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.
