8 January 1918 - The Clinton Advertiser page 1

Nels Skogeland, aged about 63 years, was accidentally killed on the Northwestern bridge early this morning, when he was struck by a train.

There were no witnesses to the fatal accident, and it was not known today what train had struck the man, who was on his way to cut ice across the river for the Northwestern. His lifeless body was found at 6:20 o'clock by James Moran, Charles Schroeder, and other Northwestern bridge employes. It was lying on the west bound track, about 40 feet from the center of the draw span. Near by was found the man's dinner pail. He had been struck on the head, and the skull was crushed, probably having caused almost instant death.

The remains were brought across to the Clinton side of the bridge, and were conveyed to the Clarke undertaking establishment. Coroner Bitner was notified, and arrived later in the day from Wheatland, and prepared to conduct an inquest.

Little is known concerning the victim of the accident. He was identified as Skogeland by the time-keeper of the Northwestern's crew of ice cutters, who called at the undertaking establishment and said he knew the man, who had been at work on the ice the past two or three days.

Some of the police also recognized Skogeland, and say he had been making his home in Clinton for years, working at odd jobs, and lately had roomed at the Anda place on Fourteenth avenue. So far as was known today, he had no relatives here. It is said the man came here from Sweden several years ago.
