Mrs. Julia Calahan was born in County Kerry, Ireland, Dec. 15, 1832. She came to this country with her parents when five years of age. They located at Rome, N.Y. where she later met and married John Calahan in 1852 she and her husband moved to Chicago where a son, John was born. In 1857 they moved to Charlotte, residing on a farm north of the city where the rest of the children were born.

There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Calahan four sons and five daughters, namely John and Daniel, deceased, James of Lono, Ark., Jeremiah of Galveston, Tex., Mrs. D. E. Martin of Roswell, N.M., Mrs. John Maher of Springville, Ia. and Misses Hannah, Mary and Rose at home in Charlotte. Mrs. Calahan also leaves sixteen grand children and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Calahan died in 1895 on the farm. The family moved to Charlotte in 1899.

Mrs. Calahan was a woman of noble character, always ready and willing to help her friends and neighbors with a kindly word for all. Her remains were followed to the cemetery by friends who knew and loved her for 58 years.

She has always been in excellent health until the past three months when she commenced to fail. She passed away Jan. 18. Requiem high mass was celebrated at Assumption church, Charlotte, Thursday at 10 a.m. by Rev. Father O'Dowd, pastor, assisted by Rev. L. Hayes of Preston and Rev. D. J. Ryan of Petersville, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.
