A. L. Holmes of this city received word of the death of his mother, which occurred Sunday night at Berkeley, Cal., where she had been visiting with her son, Earle I. Holmes. The news of her sudden death shocked the community as it was very unexpected and resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage, she having not been ill previous to her demise.

Annie Aurelia Scott was born in Fall River, Mann., Jan. 6, 1847, the youngest child of Albert Thomas and Nancy Lake Scott. She came to Iowa with her mother, who died shortly after their arrival here, and after that she made her home with her uncle, the late Benjamin Lake.

On Aug. 18, 1868, she was united in marriage to William Holmes, who preceded her in death April 6, 1910. Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. H. A. Fay of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sons, Arthur L. of this city, Earle I. of Berkeley, Cal., and Alfred S., of San Francisco, Cal., also one sister, Mrs. Eliza Bates, of Clinton, and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Holmes left here in February to spend some time in California and the west and it was while she was at the home of her son that her sudden demise occurred.

As yet it is not known what the funeral arrangements will be, pending word from other relatives.
