Last Saturday morning our people were startled by the announcement that Mrs. Ed Whitney had passed away. It was scarcely known outside the family that she was ill, but she had been confined to her home about a week suffering a severe attack of gall stones. Later other symptoms developed and upon the advice of prominent physicians, and the hope of saving her life, she was taken to Agatha hospital at Clinton where an operation was performed at two o'clock in the morning Friday, and where she peacefully passed away at nine in the evening. Mrs. Whitney has suffered from an ailment which has affected her for years, but had spent much time in doing things that would increase the enjoyment of others, especially of those less fortunate than herself, and being energetic and ambitious many times went far beyond her strength, and unbeknown to others, was at times a great sufferer. Thus to the bereaved husband and son is the consoling thought that she is "at rest."
Mary Louise Felkner was born at Vinton, Iowa, October 13, 1862, and spent her girlhood days there, on July 2nd, 1885, she was united in marriage to Edgar D. Whitney, and made that her home until1898, when they came to DeWitt, and where they have since resided. Mrs. Whitney was an active member of Golden Star Chapter, O.E.S. and of the Past Worthy Matron's club, also the DeWitt Woman's club, N. A. Merrell, G.A.R. Circle, Guild of the M.E. church, and an ardent worker in the church. Left to mourn her untimely passing are the husband, and one son Milton Whitney of DeWitt, one sister, Mrs. Florence Thompson living in Vinton and several nephews and nieces and a host of friends, both in DeWitt and in Vinton, her former home.
The body was taken from Clinton to Vinton and in the funeral party were Mr. Whitney, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Whitney, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Christensen, and Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Large. The services were held at nine-thirty o'clock Sabbath morning at the M.E. church at which time the pastor of the church, Rev. Thos. Temple, delivered a grand and impressive sermon. The pall bearers all old friends were as follows: Harry Bender, Willard Smock, Chester Moore, George Gale, Ed Pinkham, and Walter Ridge. And amid beautiful floral offerings and loving friends the earthly remains of Mrs. Whitney were laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery.
