Mary Kinkaid was born May 23, 1834, near Carlisle, Franklyn Co., Pa. She was one of nine children, her father and one brother and a sister dying when she was very young. In the fall of 1848 her mother and the children located in Princeton, Ia., the trip being made by wagon to Pittsburg, thence westward by the Ohio & Mississippi river.

In 1853 the family moved to Elvira and on December 22, 1854 she was united in marriage to Alex Work. The following March Mr. and Mrs. Work moved to the home, where the faithful companion passed away March 13, 1917.

Two children were called to their maker when very young. Mrs. Work was an invalid for thirty years and on Jan. 29, fell and broke her hip--from this she suffered but was resigned and patient. Besides the husband a brother, David Kinkaid, eight nephews and nine nieces survive.

Mrs. Work was a home-loving woman, charitable to all who asked help, ever a kind and helpful neighbor. Funeral services were conducted at the home March 16, at 1:30 o'clock, the Rev. Witham having charge of the service. Sacred selections were sung by Mrs. W. Gostick, Miss Frances Fish and G. H. Christensen. The pall bearers were J. Bousselot, A. Perry, Charles Eggleston, William Lee, F. H. Christensen and W. P. Dennison. The relatives attending from out of town were the aged brother, David of Dixon, Ia., George Kinkaid, and Miss Nina of Randolph, Neb., Miss Ollie Messcher, Effie Miller, Bert Kinkaid and Mark Hunter of Calamus, Fred Kinkaid, Mr. and Mrs. Will Work and Miss Flora of Clinton, Libbie Kinkaid, Mr. and Mrs. George Enright of Elvria.
