Mrs. Catherine Cassidy passed to her reward at 5 o'clock Sunday morning, April 22d at her home, 320 East 11th street, Davenport, Iowa, having reached the ripe old age of four score years. Catherine Tierney was born in County Cavan, Ireland, and came to this country with her parents when quite young. In 1861 she was united in marriage to Thomas Cassidy, whom she survived twenty three years. Twelve children blessed their union. Five of them preceded her in death, Joseph, Thomas, Michael, Rev. John J., and Sister Mary Bernadette of the Franciscan order. At her death bed were Bridget, who for many years lovingly provided for all her wants, Anna (Mrs. P. Lamton), Frank B., Teresa, Sister Mary Lydia and Sister Mary Elias, Sisters of Charity, B.V.M. The only absent member of the family James of Charlotte, who a few days before had gone to Clyde Park, Mont. There are also eight grandchildren to revere her memory.
Seventeen years ago the family moved to Davenport from their home in Clinton county, where they had resided for many years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. The Very Rev. J. T. A. Flannagan, V.G. was celebrant of a solemn requiem high mass and Rev. C. J. Donahue was deacon and Rev. F. M. Nugent was sub-deacon. After the impressive rites, Father Flannagan made an appropriate talk on the life and death of this beloved woman and admonished the hearers in the most fitting language to be ever mindful of the example and ideals practiced unceasingly by the deceased.
Burial was made at St. Margaret's cemetery, near her son, Rev. John J. Cassidy, whose short life of ten years in the holy priesthood was the joy and pride of her mother heart, whose deep faith and Christian motives were implanted in the Isle of Saints.
The pallbearers were P. Lannon, D. McFarland, C. Lotspeich, C. Johnson, John Dwyer and William Lillis.
