CLINTON COUNTY MOURNS LOSS OF BELOVED PIONEER
BOUGHT GOVERNMENT LAND
Funeral to Be Held Thursday Morning From Presbyterian Church--His Life Work(Special Correspondence)
Delmar, Ia., March 6--In the passing away of Calvin H. Davis Monday night at 10 o'clock Delmar as well as Clinton county, loses one of its most beloved citizens whose life work and good noble deeds cover a longer period perhaps than any other person who has entered into the New Jerusalem for many years hereabouts. Our Father Davis is dead, but tender memories will live for years to come. His life was fraught with humanitarian kindness. He was ever on the Christian and moral side of all forms. One year ago last fall he led the booster parade at Delmar in the car of his son-in-law, John Sellers.
Mr. Davis was born in Wolcott, Vt. Feb. 10, 1822, being 95 years and 22 days old. He came to Iowa in 1844, and settled in Bloomfield township, Clinton county, in 1846. He married Miss Betty Clark the same year, who died in 1870. Five children were born to this union. In 1871 he married Miss Caroline Sleeper who passed away in 1910. One child was born to them. Mr. Davis was a member of the Presbyterian church and always took an active interest in church work until old age kept him away about three years ago.
He formerly belonged to the old Whig party, but upon its decline he joined the Republican party and had always been a constant member of that party. He was the last of a family of seven children he being the oldest.
He leaves to mourn his loss five children, Mrs. Means of Maquoketa, Mrs. Bollinger, Jim Davis, Ed Davis and Mrs. John Sellers of Delmar. He made his home with Mrs. John Sellers for the last twelve years, who has given him the gentle care and attention of a loving daughter. He owned 162 1/2 acres of land near Delmar some of which he bought for $?? from the government, a half acre being worth that much now.
The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian church Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Dr. Evans of Cedar Rapids will officiate and interment will be made at Union cemetery.
