Mary was born December 10, 1936, in Delmar, Iowa, to Albert and Rosa (Voss) Eberhart. She attended several country schools in the Delmar and Charlotte area and graduated from Charlotte High School in 1955. Following graduation, she worked at the Schneckloth Café in Charlotte where she met her soulmate, Wesley Witt, when he stopped in for lunch while working at Camp & Sellnau Trucking Company. They were married at Assumption Catholic Church in Charlotte February 11, 1956. The couple resided on a farm at rural DeWitt until moving to the farm outside of Charlotte in the spring of 1962, where they lived and farmed their whole lives, and raised six children.
She was involved in 4-H as a youth and was a leader of the Charlotte Chums 4-H Club for 23 years. Mary always helped with the indoor projects at the county fair and loved to work and bake pies for the fair lunch stand. She was best known for her Custard Rhubarb pie. Putting together quilts was another of Mary’s talents. She made many quilts over the years for all of her grandchildren and for the Eberhart Christmas Party raffle prize. She also made several crocheted rugs and clothes for the kids over the years. In 1982 Mary joined Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Circle and served on the flower committee.
Mary and Wes were a team on the farm and she always helped with chores, planting, baling hay, and harvesting the crops while raising six children. She loved to grow flowers around the yard and always had a large garden every year. Polka dancing was a big part of their life. They attended many polka fests in the area and traveled to Minnesota to attend Big Joe’s Polka Show and Molly B’s Polka Party. Mary also loved a good card game and the grandkids always liked to play King’s Corner with her.
