The following account of the death of John Tierney, a well known resident of Clinton county, was taken from the Emery Enterprise of South Dakota.

Thursday evening, Jan. 4, Mrs. John Tierney of this place received a message stating that her husband was dangerously ill and was failing rapidly. Mrs. Tierney, accompanied by Phil McCormick, left on the night train to be at the bedside of her dying husband, but the angel of death had preceded her, as the soul had fled some two hours before she arrived. Although he had been ailing for sometime his death was unexpected, and it came as a shock to his many relatives and friends.

John Tierney was born in Clinton county, Iowa, July 29, 1870, and died January 5, 1917, aged 46 years, 5 months and 6 days. He was married to Miss Katherine Welbes at Bridgewater, July 5, 1905. To this union five children were born, Esther and Eugene who preceded their father to the better world, and Elsie, Raymond and Gerald. Besides his loving wife and children he leaves an aged mother, four brothers and six sisters to mourn his loss.

The esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors was attested by their presence at the funeral, it being one of the largest ever held in Emery.

The deceased was a member of the K of C and the C.O.F. of Bridgewater, where members, together with the Emery court, marched in the funeral cortege.

After the services his body was borne to its last resting place and tenderly laid to rest beside his children.

Those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Tierney of DeWitt, Iowa, Frank and Misses Isabel, Bridget and Susie Tierney, and Thos. and James Farrell of Goose Lake, Ia.; Pete and Will Clark and Ethan, Mart and Chas. Farrell of Mt. Vernon, Mat Welbes of Miller; Theresa Welbes, Mitchell; Phil Smith and sister, Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. James McCormick, Phil McCormick, Mr. and Mrs. Leitheiser, Mr. and Mrs. N. Webber, Mrs. N. Welbes and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Webber of Bridgewater; Mr. and Mrs. Leitheiser of Alexandria; Mr. and Mrs. Tormey of Teteher, near relatives of the deceased.

The pallbearers were Mike Ryan, T. P. Ryan, Will Quinn, C. Leitheiser, Joe Hetberger and Mike Shelley.

He was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and one who was always willing to help those in need.

The bereaved wife and children have, in this hour of their darkest sorrow, the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.
