Death summoned an old engineer of the Chicago & Northwestern out on his last journey Sunday evening at 9:15 o'clock, when John H. Gamble, 77 years old, passed away at his home, 539 Seventh avenue.

For more than a third of a century, John Gamble was in the service of the Northwestern. Since 1890 he has made his home in this city, coming here from Boone that year.

Mr. Gamble was born in Albany, Ill. March 4, 1840, and has been a resident of this community during most of that time. October 29, 1859 he was united in marriage with Samantha C. Boyles, who was born in Rock Island county in 1842, and who died ten years ago.

In 1873 Mr. Gamble became a member of Division No. 6 of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers at Boone. On his removal to this city he transferred his membership to Division No. 125.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at the home. The burial service will be private.

Five children are left to survive their father, all of whom have arrived in Clinton to attend the funeral. They are: Mrs. George Kuhne, Des Moines; Mrs. T. P. Rogers, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. W. G. MacNicol, Clinton; Miss Grace Gamble, Clinton; C. P. Gamble, Clinton.

Two brothers and a sister are also left. Two brothers live in Moline. The sister came Monday from her home in Rock Falls.

Funeral services for John H. Gamble, an old engineer of the Northwestern railway company, were held this morning at 10 o'clock at his late home, 539 Seventh avenue. The Rev. G. R. Cady of the First Congregational church officiated. Carlyle Walker sang "There Is No Night There".

The pall bearers were: John Pickering, Andrew Sill, Ed. Harding, Charles Bair, Peter Cedargreen, Louis Ziegenfus.

Those who attended the service from out of the city are: Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Gamble, Moline; Mrs. Joseph Smith, Rock Falls, Ill.; Mrs. Sutley, Rock Island, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Will Quick, Moline; Mrs. George Kuhne, Des Moines; Mrs. T. P. Rogers, Cedar Rapids; Meinard and Emmett Rogers, Cedar Rapids.
