Christina Sutherland was born Sept. 19, 1831 in Glasgow, Scotland, and died at her home in Los Angeles, California, Oct. 9, 1916.

She was educated in the schools of her native country and in 1847 was united in marriage with Alexander B. Cumming. Mr. Cumming sailed at once for America, leaving the child wife to follow later. She joined him about one year afterward and together they located at Bellevue, Iowa, in 1848.

Several different places claimed them as residents until 1868, when they came to DeWitt and continued to live here until after the death of Mr. Cumming seventeen years ago, when the family moved to California.

Seven children were born to this union two passing away in infancy, and two sons, Stephen and George having reached years of manhood when death claimed them.

For many years she was a consistent member of the Congregational church of this place and long after removal to another home she continued her faithful identification with its interests, ever contributing cheerfully for the best interest of the church.

Her health had been failing for some time, and during the past few months she has had many severe illnesses but looking back upon the years of strength and usefulness we can truly say of her life that it was a life well spent and her unselfish interest in others manifested itself in many kind acts and charities which will be remembered by those benefited her creed being "Let not thy right hand know what they left hand doeth."

The members of her immediate family who remain are Magnus W. Cumming living at Centerville, S. Dakota, Mrs. W. P. Dennison of this city and John A. Cumming of Los Angeles, California, the devoted son, who as time scattered snowflakes on her brow and pillowed deep furrows in her cheek has so tenderly loved her and cheered her declining years with untiring devotion.
