The funeral of the late Thomas Maltas was held at the M.E. church Sunday afternoon with services conducted by Rev. J. J. Kidder, and was largely attended by friends and relatives of the deceased. The music was furnished by Mesdames F. W. Mitchell, W. S. Saltmarsh and Messrs. G. M. Smith and Harry Taylor. The pallbearers were Guy, William, Emerson, Leslie and Herbert Maltas, and Harry Easton.

Thomas Harrison Maltas, son of William and Ann Harrison Maltas, born in Paull, near Hull, Yorkshire, England, March 21, 1836, died at DeWitt, Ia., Aug. 18, 1916, aged 80 years, 4 months and 27 days.

In the spring of 1857 Mr. Maltas bid good-bye to his father and mother and brothers and sisters and came to America, settling near Welton where he lived until twenty-four years ago, when he and his good wife moved into DeWitt. In the year 1861 he was united in marriage to Hannah Maria Cocking. Six children were given them, all of whom are living: Mary Ella Easton, Marshalltown, Ia., Charles William, Maquoketa; John Harrison, DeWitt, Thomas Benjamin, Frederic Walter and Herman Henry of Welton. In 1869 Mr. Maltas was converted to God and united with the Methodist church at Welton. He was a faithful member of the same till the time of his death. No one has been more faithful to attend the church services, both the morning and evening worship, than was Mr. Maltas. He was in his place every Sunday when many of us would have been in our beds. He came when it seemed unsafe for him to walk alone. He always encouraged the pastor by his presence, not only at the morning service but at the evening service. He was loyal to the church. He was liberal in his giving . He was a cheerful giver. He was patient, kind, an obliging neighbor. He was true blue. Surely he was a good man. Some forty-one years ago he was hurt in a runaway. He has never been real well since. Release from his clay house was with comparative ease and not much suffering. He went out in victory, trusting to his heavenly Father who had richly blessed him in life. A good man has conquered the last enemy and gone home to be crowned. He leaves a wife, six children, 23 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a niece, Mrs. H. A. Nutting of Rockland, and a host of friends and neighbors who will long miss his kindly face in their midst.
