page 8Patrick Mulholland died at his home, seven miles northeast of DeWitt, Thursday, June 1, at 9:30, after an operation performed as a last resort in an effort to save his life.
While riding horseback near his home Tuesday night, dogs pursued and bit the animal, causing it to kick and plunge in such a manner that Mr. Mulholland was thrown violently on or against a fence post, where he laid in agony nearly an hour, once attempting to stop a passing car, fearing he would not be found before morning the unfortunate man dragged himself to his feet and after making his way over a quarter of a mile, still leading the horse, was met by Godfrey McDevitt, who helped him into his buggy and brought him home, where medical aid was at once summoned and everything possible done for his relief, but his injuries, an internal rupture and other hurts of serious nature, were considered fatal almost from the first, and after two days of suffering death relieved him on Ascension Thursday, at the same hour the accident occurred two days before.
Mr. Mulholland's death is particularly sad not alone in the manner which he met it, but in that he was looking forward with a great deal of pleasure to the approaching graduation of his oldest daughter, which was to take place at Mt. St. Clare Academy, Clinton, Iowa, on Friday, June 2 which he had made arrangements to attend, instead the flowers she was to carry, a large bouquet of lilies of the valley, rested on his coffin.
Mr. Mulholland was born in Sterling, Ill. May 4, 1864, and on May 6, 1895, was married to Margaret Cassidy who with six children survive him. Joseph, who was graduated May 16 from DeWitt High, Bessie, Madge, Frank, Anna and Harry, also four brothers, John, Thomas, Matthew and James, and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Murtough, Mrs. Henry Costello, Miss Elizabeth Mulholland, all of this vicinity and Mrs. James Flannery of Fulton, Ill.
The deceased lived nearly all his life in the neighborhood in which he resided and for the last twenty-one years on the farm where he died.
