Delmar, Ia. June 19--Thomas Henry Canty was born in Kerry county, Ireland, August 15, 1845, the third of a family of seven. He came in infancy with his parents to Niagara Falls, N.Y. Later the family moved to Wisconsin, where his father was a railroad contractor and early pioneer, and he grew to manhood there. He came to Iowa in 1871, and located at Delmar, where he engaged in the mercantile business.
In 1877 he married Susan McGonegle and to them were born seven children, six of whom survive, one son, James, dying in infancy.
The family moved to South Dakota in 1883, where they engaged in farming for six years. In 1889 they returned to Delmar, where Mr. Canty again took up the mercantile business.
At 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon he was stricken with acute indigestion, and due to failing health of the past nine months, he was unable to withstand the attack, passing away at 4:15. Three weeks ago he returned from Excelsior Springs apparently much improved and on the day of his death seemed in better spirits and health than for months past.
He leaves to mourn a wife, two sons, Edward and Leonard; four daughters, Martha and Ellen (Mrs. J. P. Foley) of Delmar, Grace of Des Moines and Sarah (Mrs. J. A. Smith) of Rockton, Ill.; one brother, T. E. Canty of Rock Island; and two sisters, Mrs. Johanna Conway of Chicago **(the next line is unreadable)**Lacrosse, Wis. All of the immediate family were at his bedside except his daughters, Grace and Sarah, who were summoned immediately.
The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, requiem mass being celebrated by Mr. Canty's only nephew, Rev. Joseph F. Conway, of Madison, Wis., assisted by the pastor, Rev. P. J. O'Reilly, who paid a last tribute to the departed. Interment was made at St. Patrick's cemetery.
Hundreds of Mr. Canty's friends in and about Delmar were in attendance at the funeral. All of the local business houses were closed during the funeral hour, while a sorrowing community paid the last tribute to the man whom all had come to respect, to honor and to love.
