page 5The remains of Jeremiah Callahan, a former resident of Charlotte, reached Clinton last night and were taken today to Charlotte for burial. The Charlotte Record contains the following relative to his death.
A telegram was received here announcing the death of our former townsman, Jeremiah Callahan, death occurring in a hospital in Galveston, Texas. Mr. Callahan, in company with his brother, James, had been engaged for the past nine years in railroad construction work in New Mexico. Sometime ago he was injured in an automobile accident and taken to a Galveston hospital, but letters received from him later stated that he was getting along all right, hence the news of his death came as a shock to his relatives and friends here.
Deceased was born on the old homestead northwest of Charlotte. When a boy he attended the country school in that district and later took a business college course. He served as tax collector before that office was abolished, was secretary of the Independent District of Charlotte for a number of years and also served on the first town council. Nine years ago this spring he went to New Mexico to engage in business with his brother.
He leaves to mourn his death, five sisters and one brother, Mrs. John Maher of Spragueville, Mrs. Martin and James of New Mexico, and Misses Hannah, Mary and Rose at home.
